日常生活中，有很多我們覺得理所當然的資源，像是「水、電、交通工具」，一旦它們出了狀況就會帶給我們很巨大的影響。這時候如果人在國外旅遊，卻看不懂飯店或民宿的停水、停電通知，那就真的糗大了！今天，就來跟著專欄學習那些會造成生活上不便的各種「停」，用英文該怎麼說。
沒有水用的日子
緊急通知單上會出現的「停水」的說法。這是口語上比較少用一點的。
water outage / cut / failure
那假如今天我們是跟隔壁鄰居聊到要停水這件事，就可以換個說法：
The water got cut off.（停水了。）
We’re out of water.（我們沒有水了。）
The water supply is turned off.（停水了。）
再來你會想問水什麼時候才會來，就可以問：
When will the water supply be restored?（什麼時候會恢復供水？）
→ 練習一下：
A: I heard our water supply is going to be cut off tomorrow because of the typhoon.
（我聽說因為颱風的關係，明天會停水。）
B: Oh, really? Then we’d better start storing water now.
（喔！真假？那我們最好現在開始儲水了。）
→ 練習兩下：
A: We’ve been out of water since Sunday. When will it be restored?
（我們從禮拜日就停水了。什麼時候水會來啊？）
B: I have no idea, but maybe we should get more water just in case.
（我也不知道，但我們應該弄更多水以防萬一。）
你是電你是光
停電跟停水一樣很不方便，先認識常常寫在緊急通知單上的「停電」會怎麼呈現：
power outage / cut / failure
blackout
那假如今天是通知家人家裡停電了，就可以換個說法：
The power went out.（停電了。）
The power is off.（電沒了。）
停了一陣子電，突然發現又有電了，就可以說：
The power is back on.（有電了。）
The power has returned.（電回來了。）
→ 練習一下：
A: The power just went out. Where’s the flashlight?
（剛剛停電了。手電筒在哪裡？）
B: I don’t know. Let’s just wait for a few minutes. I think it’ll be back on soon.
（我不知道耶。我們等幾分鐘好了。我覺得很快就會有電。）
→ 練習兩下：
A: The power went off an hour ago, and it hasn’t returned yet.
（一小時前停電了，而且電還沒來。）
B: Maybe it’s because of the earthquake.
（可能是地震的關係。）
